On 30 June we had the Akirachix Meet up. The theme of the meet up was apps, presentation and making money; all very interesting subjects in the Kenyan Tech scene. We started the meet up by watching two videos of Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook. One was her talk on TED women titled “why we have too few women leaders” and the second one was the Barnard College commencement 2011. We will be doing more talks and videos in our meet ups.

After the talk the ladies were divided into groups to come up with applications that can be turned into profitable businesses. They were then supposed to pitch the applications to the other teams. After the pitching session, the teams voted for the best app, the catch was that they could not vote for their own idea. We hope to highlight some of those working apps on this blog in the near future.

Finally we had a business pitch from Hildah Moraa founder M-order, an efficient way for clients to order, view and pay suppliers for products without having to physically travel to distribution centers, saving small business owners valuable time and money. She and her team mates will be pitching the app in IPO48 this weekend from August 12-14. The winning team will get funding worth 25, 000 Euros. We wish her the best and hope she wins!!
