We celebrate #IWD2019
#IWD2019 (International Women’s Day)“International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for moving towards gender parity. ”
In the 8 years since inception, AkiraChix has driven the empowerment of women and girls in Kenya. We continue to reach and impact young women who would most likely miss out on higher education or the pursuit of a technology career.
Over the last 8 years, we focussed primarily on young women from low-income areas in Nairobi and its environs. During that period we were able to successfully train over 146 girls with 86% job placement each year running up to 2018.
Year after year, we received requests from girls located outside Nairobi other counties wanting to join codeHive, but lacking a place they could stay locally for the year while they were training.
This year (2019), we embarked on our most ambitious pursuit yet and launched a campus that offers boarding facilities for our codeHive class which will allow us to admit students from all over Kenya.
We also doubled our intake from 26 young girls from Nairobi in the past, to 52 girls all hailing from 14 different counties like West Pokot, Marsabit, Lamu, Bungoma, etc.
Along with our various programs and community activities such as stem clubs (Genius Skwad & Dev Skwad), our foundation course Dev Maker Studio, annual events Geek Girl festival (GGFest), African Women In Technology (AWTC), we continue to champion women participation in the technology arena always believing in #BalanceForBetter. Our community activities have successfully allowed us to reach and connect with 10,000 plus women.
To all women supporting women, for a better future and for the generations to come, with the aim of leaving this world a little better than we found it, we celebrate them. #BalanceforBetter
