By Martha Saka Class of 2016
My name is Martha Saka and I am a student at AkiraChix training program. We are going through a one-year intensive course in programming, design and entrepreneurship skills with the objective to equip us with knowledge that will propel us to find financial liberating opportunities and escape the trap of poverty and lack of education.
I am humbled to be part of the program, and each day of my life since joining Akirachix has been different. I love the internet and what it offers but the best part of it all is that I can code and create; websites, mobile applications, and more. Each day has a different unit that we get to study and we have the privilege of having our own laptop and Wi-Fi – sums it all up.
My units of preference have been front end development and mobile development. This is because I understand them better. Recently, we were given the challenge to create business ideas that could solve problems in the society using technology. I created a mobile application which I have already started working on.
My day begins at 9 am and ends at 4 pm. I study two units in a day and they are well balanced since the technical part of my learning is always in the morning and the soft skills in the afternoon. Time is also well spread out as each unit has a duration of about two hours, allowing us free time to work on assignments and read further. The facilitators are well groomed, know how to teach well, friendly and ready to help when we are stuck. The fact that they work in good tech companies and have amazing projects under their names challenges and inspires me to work harder.
In a nutshell, this is the place I have always wanted to be. Each day I do something different, face different challenges and sometimes there are a few tears. At the end of it all, I am grateful because the AkiraChix is all about equipping me with skills that will help me go a long way in life. I am getting the hang of it, and ready for what life throws at me every day because I am all about growth.
Thank you AkiraChix!
